How do I know if my physician is a sports medicine specialist?

A sports medicine specialist is a specialty trained orthopaedic surgeon who has dedicated an extra year of medical training (fellowship training) in the specialty area of sports medicine. There are 59 accredited Sports Medicine Fellowship programs in the United States. You can find out more information about the accredited Sports Medicine Programs and sports injuries from the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM) at www.sportsmed.org

Sports Medicine Specialists undergo extensive training in musculoskeletal medicine and management of sports injuries. If your injury requires a sports medicine trained specialist, make sure your surgeon has been fellowship trained in sports medicine. Ask questions and be inquisitive. Be advised that many physicians may refer themselves to as "sports physicians" while they have not received any formal training in that area. The physicians that are fellowship trained will be happy to answer any of your questions regarding their specialty training or sports injuries/injury management. If getting back to play/performance is a priority to you, make sure you seek treatment from a Sports Medicine Specialist. Through research and advances in surgical and rehabilitation techniques, orthopaedic sports medicine specialists have been able to treat and rehabilitate athletes whose injuries were once career-ending and put them back in the game.

Sports Medicine is NOT for the competitive athlete only

Sports Medicine Specialist are ideal providers for the non-athlete and are excellent resources for the individual who wishes to stay active or begin an exercise program. For the "weekend warrior" or "industrial athlete" who experiences and injury, the same expertise used for the competitive athlete can be applied to return the individual as quickly as possible to full function.
